The Wig Head Course: Anatomy of the Swallow

Course Description:

Anatomy is the foundation for all we do.  Get back to the basics with our most complicated patients. Study anatomy in a fun, hands-on way and apply techniques that will help your medically-challenging patients learn to eat.  This highly interactive workshop for OT/COTAs and SLP/SLPAs encourages participants to draw from their own experiences and caseloads for group problem-solving and discussion.  Enjoy this hands-on presentation that will encourage and motivate all participants.  Go back to your medically-challenging patients with real tools to help!

Key Learning Outcomes:

1. Construct a 3-D model of the primary muscle groups involved in swallowing and be able to list the origin, insertion, action and innervation for each muscle and how each functions in the pressure-valve system of the human swallow.
2. Formulate specific techniques to aid in strengthening each group.
3. Utilize knowledge of anatomy of specific muscle groups to adapt therapy techniques to individual clients.
4. Critique new methods and therapeutic approaches not yet fully studied, based on your knowledge of how the oropharyngeal mechanism works.
