Love or Logic: Effective Counseling Methods for Pediatric Feeding Disorders

 
The newly proposed definition of a Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) incorporates the negative psychosocial effects that exist when there is an interruption of the child-caregiver interaction that is associated with the deficits, which occur when a child is unable to thrive. In this course, you will learn two evidenced-based methods for providing effective counseling for both increased buy-in and ultimately, improved outcomes in your practice of therapy. Both methods will provide the learner with specific verbiage with which to implement the very next day!
 

Key Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Recall at least 3 techniques of each counseling method.
  • Explain the clinical application of each technique recalled.
  • Discuss the need for additional education and research regarding counseling in the field of Speech Pathology.

About the Presenter:
Melanie Van Noy MS, CCC-SLP, CLC

Melanie is an ASHA certified Speech-Language pathologist of 8 years, and has worked in various settings including home health, outpatient, and presently the acute care setting within the NICU. She specializes in pediatric feeding and swallowing and has also obtained certifications as a lactation counselor and neuromuscular electrical stimulation with Vital Stim. Melanie has a passion to educate colleagues at the local, state, and national level in regards to pediatric feeding and swallowing to enable them to practice at the highest levels of evidence-based care. She has also taken on the role of adjunct faculty with the new Speech-Language Pathology program through the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio to educate students how to best support the development of healthy feeding relationships and the treatment of feeding disorders.
