IAOM 2021 Session 04 | A Functional Approach to TMD

TMD etiology has long been assumed to be mechanical. Whether due to poor occlusion, disc displacement or even fascial oral restrictions. However, the latest research has demonstrated clearly that chronic pain is a biopsychosocial phenomenon. In other words, pain is functional and the solution for most patients is a functional one.

This lecture will help you to understand the parafunctional habits that contribute to TMD as well as the role of structural / mechanical contributing factors. More importantly this lecture will give you an understanding of TMD that makes it clear that functional retraining, including OMT neuromuscular retraining has a significant role to play in helping TMD patients.

The participant learned to differentiate the micro and macro anatomy of fascia and its role in orofacial function and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). They explored the scientific evidence regarding bruxism and occlusion and manual assessments and possible adjunct therapies for use in TMD.
